George Macauley Trevelyan was a prominent and highly respected historian who was a Master of Trinity College and a Fellow of the Royal Society. His father Sir George Otto Trevelyan, 2nd Baronet, was also a historian and writer.
He married Janet Penrose Ward, daughter of novelist Mrs Humphrey Ward, who resided in Aldbury and they then moved to Berkhamsted. Trevelyan wrote over twenty books on a range of historical subjects.
