DACHT : 432.56.19.19 Photograph of a postcard of a group of people on the beach, Isle of Wight, 1907.

Families visiting Hemel Library on Thursday, 3 June were transported back in time to discover what seaside holidays were like in the past. Photographs from the collection showed what people used to wear, how they travelled to the seaside and thought about how Victorian children played in their clothes!

Using objects from the collection, children made thaumotropes using seaside images such as a sandcastle with a flag and a lobster being caught in the net. Adults were asked to write down memories of seaside holidays in the past to encourage discussions about how similar seaside holidays are today to those in the past.
