Paper Pioneers by Joan and Roger Hands, edited by Denis Miles. This book explores the story of paper over the last 6,000 years, from the Egyptian and Chinese processes to the mechanised, international industry of today. The very first commercial papermaking machines were set up at Frogmore and Two Waters Mills, near Hemel Hempstead. The lives of the early pioneers, amongst them Henry Fourdrinier, Bryan Donkin, John Dickinson and John Evans, are told in some detail, as well as the social history of the paper mills in the Gade Valley area of Hertfordshire. The mills' own fire brigades, war time efforts, brand names and the local rivers that helped to found the papermaking industry, are all well described. The story culminates in the recently opened Paper Trail Visitor Centre at Frogmore Mill - the birthplace of paper's industrial revolution.
