On the 7th April 2017 we held our canal art workshop, kindly hosted by the Berkhamsted Arts and Crafts shop, with techniques taught by sign painter Hannah Matthews.
The session started with an introduction to the history of local canals, showing the route through the countryside and was followed by our Collections Manager Nicola, sharing historic images and objects from our collection. These included three examples of canal art, beautiful roses and patterns, decorating everyday items.
Using these items from the collection as inspiration Hannah led the group through the stages needed to achieve authentic canal art roses. Attendees then painted a trio of roses before going on to decorate their own version of a canal jug.
We had some brilliant results and some great feed back, including:
Thank you WOW
We had a great time, thank you
Thank you, great fun and generous access to materials
We will be displaying these during our pop-up exhibition from May 27th – June 10th at the Marlowes Shopping Centre, Hemel Hempstead. Watch this space for more information!
