We have launched this appeal to fund the purchase of this unique medieval property in
Piccotts End, Hemel Hempstead. We need YOUR help to preserve this nationally important heritage site.
This wonderful Grade I listed 15th Century cottage has a fascinating past. In 1953 the owner, Arthur Lindley, discovered under layers of wallpaper the pre-reformation religious wall paintings. You can view the Pathé News here.
It was also the site of the first cottage hospital in England set up to treat the poor, established in 1826 by the eminent surgeon Sir Astley Paston Cooper (surgeon to King George IV). This was ultimately the forerunner to the present NHS.
To see the Gazette film of the cottages here, which was made to support the Heritage Open Days in September 2013; this was the first time that the general public had been able to view the medieval wall paintings for over 20 years.
Our ambition is to establish a visitor interpretation centre in the cottage, which can tell the story of its quite amazing past and open the cottage to the public so that folks can visit and enjoy these magnificent paintings.
If you would like to help us raise funds to purchase the cottage in Piccotts End and establish a visitor interpretation centre to allow for public access. YOU can help us to ensure these unique wall paintings will be opened to the public and conserved for our future generations.

Gift Aid – Please gift aid your donation to this appeal, if you are a UK tax payer.
I confirm I have paid or will pay an amount of Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax for each tax year (6 April – 5 April) that is at least equal to the amount of tax that all the charities or Community Amateur Sports Clubs (CASCs), that I donate to, will reclaim on my gifts for that tax year. I understand that other taxes such as VAT and Council Tax do not qualify. I understand the charity will reclaim 25p of tax on every £1 that I give.
We would like to get the ‘taxman’ to donate as well.
