First World War Workshop

This workshop enables the children to experience how people’s lives were affected by the First World War. Following the centenary commemorations of 2018, pupils are more aware of the conflict and this is a chance for them to experience some of the hardships their ancestors may have faced.

D ivided into three groups, with a volunteer at each group, the class will be able to explore all three of the following sessions:

  • A handling and discussion session using real and replica objects of the period including mess tins, soldier’s whistle, death penny, medals, photographs, postcards, and other objects.
  • Learn about the life of one soldier from our locality, Jack Evans from Hemel Hempstead, who was injured in the conflict and rewarded the DCM for his bravery.
  • A craft activity – making a medal. Pupils are provided with a circle of air drying clay and encouraged to decorate it in a fitting way for a soldier to receive.

“This type of activity is so important. My daughter learnt so much, she came home filled with information.” – Parent
