Born and educated in Apsley. Flew from RAF Lissett on Wednesday 24th May 1944 in a Halifax on a mission to Aachen. Unfortunately his aircraft never returned. He had just passed his final interview for a commission as Flying Officer and the following Saturday was due to receive this promotion. His medals were however awarded posthumously to Pilot Officer Baldwin. The local paper reports that his mother, Mrs.Olive Baldwin, had sent him £7 by post to help him purchase various necessities for the occasion. “The money is in the post now”, she told the Observer. “He had striven so hard to become an officer”. LEWIS Dilley, of Anchor Lane in Hemel Hempstead, signed up to the Royal Navy as soon as he turned 17. Lewis, who had grown up in Boxmoor, was assigned to HMS Corncrake. He was lost at sea in February 1943 before a year was up when the ship disappeared. Lewis went to Boxmoor Church of England School in St Johns Road. He had grown up learning a lot about signals from his father who was a Telegraphist in the Royal Corps of Signals.

Sergeant Jack Riddle, who grew up in Hemel Hempstead, was keen to sign up and serve in the Second World War. Jack lived in his parents’ home in St Pauls Road and was in the Hemel Hempstead Air Training Corps before being called up in 1943 aged 18. He was in the local 1187 squadron of the ATC. Jack was a gunner in a crew of seven manning a Lancaster bomber. He was killed aged 19 on 15th March 1944 while raiding Stuttgart in Germany. He is buried in Heath Lane cemetery. Ten days later the crew went out on another raid and they all died except for one – a bomb aimer. Prior to going into the airforce he was working part-time in the British Brush Boring Company in Ebberns Road operating a wood boring machine. He was also an auxiliary in the Fire Service and worked as a messenger boy.

SELLS Harold Gunner 5954977, 70 Field Regiment (Beds & Herts), Royal Artillery. Harold Sells was born in Hemel Hempstead, the much loved son of Sidney and Alice (Hearn) Sells, and step son of Emily Sells.Being musically inclined, Harold was a member of the Hemel Hempstead Harmonica Band. He was killed on 16th April 1943, aged 27 years, whilst driving an ammunition truck which was hit by the enemy. He is buried, with Honour, in the Medjez-EI-Bab War Cemetery (Plot 16. Row D. Grave 9) 60 km West of Tunis, Tunisia, North Africa — one month before the campaign ended there.

SELLS James aka Jim Private 5956372, 1st/7th Battalion, Queen’s Own Royal Regiment (West Surrey). James (Jim) Sells was born in Hemel Hempstead, the much loved son of Sidney and Alice (Hearn) Sells, and step son of Emily Sells. Jim was the husband of Isobel (Alexandria) Sells and father to son Ross. He was injured and returned to his Hemel home to recover and then returned to the front line. Whilst being evacuated from the island of LeRos onto H.M. minesweeper, there was a dive bombing attack on the ship and Jim was seen to go overboard. He was killed between 16th & 17th November 1943, his body was never found…lost at sea. He was 23 years old. He is remembered with Honour, on the Cassino Memorial (Panel 4) within the Cassino War Cemetary, which lies in the Commune of Cassino, Province of Frosinone — 139km south east of Rome, Italy.

Sergeant Charles Derek Smith served as a Navigator in the RAF’s 103 Squadron in the Second World War. Charles, who grew up Orchard Street in Apsley, Hemel Hempstead, died when his plane was shot down by anti-aircraft guns over Cologne in Germany, 26th February 1943. He was 25. While growing up he had been a keen boxer and joined the RAF as a cadet when he was 15, becoming a fabric maker. He later trained as a navigator in Canada and Hendon. While in Hendon he met and married Rosina who was working in Edgware. The couple were apart for long periods of time during the war but they kept in touch by letter. They had a daughter, Barbara. Three years later, when Charles was reported lost, Rosina was pregnant with their second daughter, Jenny. Charles is buried in Rhinesberg Military Cemetery.

He was killed in 1944 aged 24 during the Sangro River Battle in Italy when his observation post was mortared. His task had been to find a target and send information back to the guns, as well as maintaining the telephone line to the guns. Harry was one of the sons of well-known fishmonger in the town, Mr H. Walker of St Albans Road. He attended George Street School and gained employment with Mr E. Gale of Marlowes.
