Private Edward Barber VC

Edward Barber was born in Tring in 1894, the son of William and Sarah Ann Barber.

During the First World War he served in the Grenadier Guards. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for bravery at the Battle of Neuve Chappelle on 12 March 1915.

The citation states that he ran in front of a grenade company and threw bombs with such effect that numbers of Germans at once surrendered.

When his Company came up, Private Barber was found quite alone with the enemy surrendering all around him.

He was killed later the same day by a sniper’s bullet.
