First World War Database

In 1999, The Dacorum Heritage Trust mounted a major exhibition focusing on local soldiers who served in the First World War. In preparation for the exhibition, we gathered material (including photographs) from local families whose relatives had served during the conflict. We also began to compile a database of all soldiers in the Borough whose names appear on the war memorials. We used sources such as the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, local newspapers and family testimony.

We endeavoured to discover as much as possible about the men - their names, age, death date, location of grave, how they were killed, family details, occupation and place of work and any other details (eg member of a local church, sports clubs). We also discovered men whose names were not recorded on local war memorials. Please let us know if you can add to any of the information provided or if we have made any errors. We hope in due course to do a similar exercise for soldiers of the Second World War.

Some soldiers appear on more than one local war memorial. We have therefore used the following code letters to indicate where this is the case:-
