History of the Trust

The Formation of the Trust

The Dacorum Museum Advisory Committee (DMAC) was created in 1979 to advise the then Dacorum District Council on heritage matters. It formed the foundations for the Trust’s current activities, particularly with education, exhibitions, publications and outreach. The Dacorum Heritage Trust (DHT) was founded in September 1993.

The Museum Store in Berkhamsted is situated in the old fire station buildings, which were specially converted in 1994. This is where all the artifacts are housed, catalogued and conserved. The Trust has one full -time, Collections Manager who is supported by three part-time staff members, a Museum Support Assistant, a Finance Manager and an Administrative Assistant, along-with a large and loyal group of volunteers. DHT achieved Museum Accreditation in 2008 from the Arts Council England, and we have continued to up follow and uphold these standards when caring for and sharing our collections to this day.

The Museum Store is the home of the heritage of the Borough of Dacorum and as such we routinely catalogue our items electronically, for the benefit of present and future generations.
